We are a “special character” secondary School with 400 students. We are fully state funded and our school is located in the centre of Christchurch City. Our ‘special character’ is based on supportingt the individuality of students, strong partnership with parents and discovery or inquiry based learning.
Our “look of learning” is based on the New Zealand Curriculum and our students use the National Qualifications Framework (NCEA) as their qaulification pathway. Students at Unlimited, however, have their own Individual Edcation Plan (IEP) negotiated in conjunction with their parents and their chosen Learning Advisor. This IEP is reviewed at least three times during the year and is the basis a regular 1:1 discussion between student and Learning Advisor to monitor progress and ensure appropriate guidance and support. The timetable is arranged in 5 week modules and students are able to choose their area of study and a new learning schedule every five weeks. Students are also able to choose to undertake their own individual or collaborative inquiries as well as Learning Advisor facilitated classes. Our classes are not restricted in terms of year level and students are free to take classes or follow studies that are outside of their traditional year level. Many students set and pursue learning and qualification goals that are in excess of what they would be allowed to take in a traditional school or plan their to achieve goals like Universtity Entrance over two years.
