The university has close to 22,500 students with an academic staff of 1,700. At undergraduate level, this means some large courses may have 400 students in a lecture, so many courses also have tutorials with between 10 and 20 students, or labs with between 20 and 40 students. At postgraduate level there can be as few as five students, depending on the subject area.

Established in 1873 by scholars from Oxford and Cambridge, the University of Canterbury, in Christchurch, New Zealand, has an international reputation for academic excellence in both teaching and research. Its first (undergraduate) degrees and higher (postgraduate) programmes aim to foster intellectual independence, critical thinking, and professional excellence in every field.

Teaching at the University is research-based and all academic staff are expected to be involved in research and publishing. As a result even undergraduate students can expect to be taught by lecturers who are at the forefront of knowledge in their subject. Teaching and supervision up to PhD level is available in every discipline. UC has the largest university-based supercomputer in the southern hemisphere, is home to NZi3 (the national ICT innovation centre) as well as a large number of research centres and six field stations.
