Villa Maria College is an integrated College for girls in Years 7 to 13 whose aim is to provide a Catholic education of the highest standard encompassing Christian values and a total environment where students are encouraged to reach their potential in spiritual, personal and intellectual development. The College was established in 1918 by the Sisters of Mercy.
Villa Maria College is set in 4.5 hectares of landscaped grounds and has excellent teaching, sporting and Information technology facilities. The College is situated in Upper Riccarton, Christchurch near the University of Canterbury. This is a safe, thriving, well resourced community which welcomes a diverse international student population from around the world.
The teaching staff has outstanding, secure knowledge of their subject areas and are committed to the success of their students.
The College has four fully equipped computer suites, a Library Information and Resource Centre and modern teaching facilities. The auditorium and gymnasium were opened in 1998 and the new Arts block opened in 2005.
New all-weather sports courts were established in 2007 and other sporting facilities include rugby and soccer fields and a swimming pool.
A high priority is given to the welfare of international students and Villa Maria College strives to create a family-like atmosphere. Both a director of International Students, her assistant and a Homestay Co-ordinator oversee the girls’ pastoral care. Together with the ESOL teachers they ensure that each student enters the College smoothly.
